Part I – Mobile Communication System Evolution from 4G to 5G
(50 marks)
In block 3 of this course, you have studied fourth-generation system in mobile
communication. In this Part of the TMA, you are requested to investigate in more details
some further aspects of this subject and its evolution to 5G by writing a report of 1400-1600
words in length explaining and discussing the following issues:
 Need For 5G Technology (10 Marks)
 Comparison of Network Architecture (10 Marks)
 Modulation Schemes (10 Marks)
 Spectrum (5 Marks)
 Features (10 Marks)
 Applications (5 Marks)
You should refer to reliable resources (books, papers, conferences, and AOU e-library). You
should also adhere to the following guidelines in writing the report:
o The report should be between 1400-1600 words in length.
o The report should include at least two figures and/or tables. Inclusion a caption for
each figure/table is necessary.
o Use cross-referencing and citation.
o The report should have appropriate structure and style (introduction, body, and
conclusion.)
o All the references must be cited in proper format.
o Any act of plagiarism will not be tolerated.
Part II: Solve the following problems (50 marks)
1) Figure 1 is plotted with a logarithmic scale along the S/N axis, as the range of values
covered is very wide. (10 marks)
a. What happens when the signal power is equal to the noise power?
b. Comment on the general shape of the curve above and below this point.

2) Verify if the following EAN-13 code is correct or not. Detail your answer.

3) A space mission to Mars is recording data about the planet’s surface, and sending the
data back to scientists on Earth for analysis. The experimental data consists of
measurements, given to the nearest centimetre, of how far a probe is able to penetrate
the surface. Scientists have predicted that the surface of the region under test will be
similar to a certain region on Earth, for which they already have penetration data. This
data is given in Table 1, where the first column gives the penetration depth (to the
nearest centimetre) and the second column gives the relative frequency of this
outcome. (30 marks)

The communications link has a low data rate, so a very efficient coding must be used for the
transmission. A Huffman code is therefore used, based on the data in Table 1.
(a) Using a fixed-length code, how many bits would be needed for each code word?
(b) Work out a Huffman code to find a possible set of code words for the different penetration
depths.
(c) What is the average code word length using the Huffman code?
(d) Calculate to determine the entropy of this source.
(e) Calculate the efficiency of:
(i) the fixed-length code
(ii) the Huffman code.
