Question 1:WiMAX technology:
This question carries 25 of the marks for this assignment.

WiMAX can provide multiple types of services to the same user with different QoS levels. For example, it is possible to install a single WiMAX transceiver in an office building and provide real time telephone services and best effort Internet browsing services on the same WiMAX connection. Using the internet and other resources (e.g., books and AOU e-library), write a report focusing on the following factors:

• Explain the basic operation of WiMAX? (3 marks)
• Discuss the major types of WiMAX services? (3 marks)
• What are the transmission rates for WiMAX? (3 marks)
• Discuss the protocols used in WiMAX? (3 marks)
• What is the physical and logical channel types used in WiMAX?(3 marks)
• Explain the basic security operation of WiMAX? (3 marks)


Short Report Writing:

Please adhere to the following guidelines for writing your report:

Your report should be between 700 and 800 words in length. Under-length and over-length reports will be penalized.
Your report should include at least two figures and/or tables. Do not forget to include a caption for each figure/table and to use cross-referencing. (1 Mark)
Ensure that your report meets the objectives, has an appropriate structure and style, and that its technical level is appropriate for the audience, purpose and medium. For more details, you can refer to the T215 textbooks (Block 1 – Part 7; Block 2 – Part 7 and Block 3). (1 mark)
You MUST include at least 5 good quality references and ensure that they are cited within the text of your solutions making use ofciting/referencing style you have learned in session 6 of T215A. (5 marks)
You are advised to remind yourself of the issues concerning plagiarism.












Question 2: Numerical.
This question carries 15 of the marks for this assignment.

Part A: (5 marks)
Using an internet connection that usually downloads at 2000 kilobits per second, how many hours would it take to download the 1.5 GB file? (Express time in hours)

Part B: (5 marks)
In Figure 1 shown below, how much stronger is the signal from transmitter A at the car than the signal from transmitter B if dA is five times as large as dB, if the distances between the car and the transmitters are over 100 m? Show intermediate steps.

Part C: (5 marks)

Digital cameras are usually designed to use the JPEG algorithm to compress raw images into smaller files. Some cameras allow the user to set how much compression to use.Suppose a memory card is used that can store 8 GB (assume 8 GB=8x103 MB). What is the smallest compression ratio that a user can set the camera to if he wants to store 1000 photos on the card and the raw photo size is again 40 MB?
